General Programme Information

What age group are the classes for?
Our classes are designed for children aged 7–11 years old (school years 3–6).

What do the classes involve?
Each session includes:

  • Basic music notation and musical vocabulary

  • Interactive musical games and fun warm-up activities

  • Lots of group singing!

Each term follows a specific musical theme or genre. For example, Term 1 will explore pulse and rhythm through music from movies.

What is the duration of each session and when are they held?
Sessions last for 1 hour, running from 4:30–5:30 pm every Thursday during South Gloucestershire term dates. You can view specific dates here.

Location and Venue

Where are the classes held?
Our classes take place in the lower hall (Epworth Hall) at Thornbury Methodist Church. Get directions here (we are located in the same building as the Scout Group), or use What3words: ///smallest.hotspots.adopts.

Is there parking available?
Yes, Castle Court Car Park is just a 2-minute walk from the venue. Short-stay parking is currently free for up to two hours.

Enrolment and Fees

How do I sign up for a class?
You can register by completing our registration form. Once submitted, we'll confirm your child's registration by email.

What are the fees?
Each session costs £6 per child, payable termly. The total termly fee varies according to term length, from £30 (5-week term) to £48 (8-week term).

Are there any additional costs?
No, there are no extra costs—everything your child needs is included in the session fees.

Health and Safeguarding

What safety measures are in place?
Your child’s safety is our priority. Our safety measures include:

  • Enhanced DBS checks for all staff (available upon request)

  • Staff trained in paediatric first aid and child safeguarding

  • Public liability insurance cover up to £1,000,000

  • Compliance with the venue’s health and safety policy

Music Curriculum and Experience

What does the curriculum cover?
Our comprehensive programme covers musical elements such as rhythm, tempo, dynamics, melody, harmony, and texture. Your child will also learn basic music notation and, of course, singing skills.

Do children need any prior musical experience?
No previous experience is required—we welcome all children aged 7–11, whatever their musical background.

Will my child learn to read music?
Yes, your child will learn how to recognise musical notes and read music notation on a stave.

Communication and Updates

How will I receive updates about classes or changes?
We communicate updates via email and social media. We also run a WhatsApp group for parents, allowing you to easily ask questions and stay informed.

Additional Questions

My child is shy or nervous. Will they feel comfortable?
Our classes are friendly and supportive, designed to make every child feel welcome. If your child feels nervous, you're welcome to stay during the first session to help them settle in.

Does my child need to bring anything to class?
Your child just needs to bring a water bottle, their enthusiasm and singing voice!
